[Turns out, there's some advantages to taking on an apprentice!
Jack had never bothered before. Like he had the time to go scouting in villages and hamlets for some magically talented little asshole to take under his wing. But this one...this one had come to him. Flattering, really. Not surprising, though, of course not. Jack's pretty much the magical badass around here. His name - or at least the name the world knows him by - is synonymous with power.
But this kid had the iron ore balls to march right up to Jack's tower and ask to learn. On top of balls, he has talent. Lots of talent, lots of ambition, things that are pretty useful. Things Jack can use to his own advantage. Besides, it's kinda nice having company that isn't the small staff of local villagers that clean up after him for a couple of hours a day. Rhys isn't a complete idiot, and he's eager to learn.
Not to mention very easy on the eyes.
Jack's mostly been letting the guy peruse his own interests, allowing him access to some of his extensive magical library. He's taught him some stuff, but he's more curious to know what Rhys has been pursuing on his own. He's in his study, behind his great impressive onyx desk, with an ancient tome open in front of him. There's an open bottle of wine beside it and Jack's dressed in his customary black robes.

He's told Rhys he wants to see him.]
